"My Dearest" Kdrama Review: Why It Won Me Over Despite Not Liking Historical Dramas

Edit Posted by with No comments

If you’re looking for a K-drama to watch, you might want to check out “My Dearest,” a historical melodrama starring Namkoong Min and Ahn Eun Jin. Don’t worry, it’s not a boring sageuk about the royal family. It’s a touching story of ordinary people who faced the Qing invasion of Joseon with courage and hope. I’ve been watching it and I can tell you it’s worth your time.

"My Dearest" Kdrama Review

This is a historical melodrama that follows the lives and loves of four people during the Qing invasion of Joseon. Jang Hyun, a cold and lonely man, meets Gil Chae, a warm and cheerful woman who loves Yeon Jun, a scholar who is engaged to her best friend, Eun Ae. Yeon Jun is torn between his duty and his heart, while Eun Ae is loyal and understanding. As war breaks out, their fates become intertwined in unexpected ways. Will they be able to overcome the hardships and find their true happiness?

Who’s in it: Namkoong Min as Jang Hyun, Ahn Eun Jin as Gil Chae, Lee Hak Joo as Yeon Jun, Lee Da In as Eun Ae

How many episodes: 20 (Part 1 – 10 episodes, Part 2 – 10 episodes)

What kind of show: Historical, Melodrama, Romance, Drama

Why I like it

1. The male lead and female lead aren't your typical characters

"My Dearest" Kdrama Review

Namkoong Min is known for his unconventional roles, and Lee Jang Hyun is no exception. He seems like a selfish and foolish man who hides his true identity. But he's actually a brilliant strategist who leads Joseon’s resistance against the Qing invasion. He's willing to sacrifice himself for the people he cares about.

Yoo Gil Chae (Ahn Eun Jin) is a lively and cheerful woman who loves Yeon Jun, a scholar who is engaged to her best friend. She may act childish at first, but she grows into a strong and compassionate person who helps others in need. She is not a helpless heroine and adds some humor to this melodrama.

2. A love story that grew in the midst of war

Lee Jang Hyun and Yoo Gil Chae start off as enemies who can’t stand each other. But as they spend more time together, they begin to see each other’s true colors. Jang Hyun is captivated by Gil Chae’s warmth and courage. He becomes determined to protect her and make her happy, even if it means risking his own life. Jang Hyun is also romantic in his words, which melts Gil Chae’s heart. She can’t help but fall for him, even though she loves someone else.

Jang Hyun and Gil Chae are often separated by the war, so their reunions are full of emotion and longing. They have amazing chemistry and tension, thanks to the great acting of both main leads. You may find yourself cheering for this couple!

3. A hit drama with top ratings and buzz

Honestly, I didn't intend to watch "My Dearest" as historical dramas aren't my thing. But I decided to see it out of curiosity about its huge popularity.

The drama is a huge success in South Korea. It has been leading its timeslot with high ratings, and each episode has been more popular than the previous one. Namkoong Min and Ahn Eun Jin have also impressed the audience with their acting skills, and they have been ranked among the most talked-about actors and actresses.

4. Inspired by “Gone With The Wind”?

This is a wonderful and original drama with amazing actors! I noticed that the main characters and some of the plot twists are inspired by the American classic “Gone with the Wind” by Margaret Mitchell, which is one of my favorite books.

The first two episodes might seem a bit slow because they introduce the characters and the story. But it gets more exciting with every episode. The drama has stunning visuals, smooth storytelling, and engaging dialogue. You may be hooked by the drama and lose track of time.
