I don't want to get married anymore! I want to stay single! The birth rate is plunging as young people aged 19 to 34 are single and hesitant to marry.

The youth generation (ages 19 to 34) in Korea was 10.213 million in 2020, making up 20.4% of the total population. This is a decrease of 483,000 people and 4.5 percentage points in 5 years compared to 2015. According to the future population projections by Statistics Korea, the youth population will be halved in 30 years. By 2050, the youth generation will be only 5.213 million, or 11.0% of the total population.
The sharp decline in the youth population is alarming, but what is more surprising is that 81.5% of young people are single. According to a survey by Statistics Korea, the proportion of unmarried youth has surpassed 80% for the first time. Especially, the number of single people aged 30 to 34 has increased from 18.7% in 2000 to 56.3% in 2020, a threefold increase. Among those aged 25 to 29, 87.4% are single. In 2000, many people got married in their late 20s, but only 54.2% of people in this age group were single. Even though they are not counted as young people statistically, the proportion of single people in their late 30s (35 to 39 years old) also increased by four times over the past 20 years, from 7.2% to 30.7%. The trend of young people not marrying or marrying late is getting faster.
As a result, the average age of first marriage in 2022 was pushed back to 33.7 years for men and 31.3 years for women.
