Cha Eun-woo charged toward Kim Nam-joo at full throttle, captivating us with a breathtaking ending.
The 9th episode revealed the affair between Su-ho (played by Kim Kang-woo) and Yuri (played by Im Se-mi), causing Su-hyun (played by Kim Nam-joo) immense pain from the betrayal by the 2 people she trusted. However, instead of crumbling as Seon-yul (played by Cha Eun-woo) had hoped, Su-hyun chose to confront him head-on, setting the stage for a tense showdown.
Yuri’s biological mother (played by Jo Yeon-hee) subtly slipped a photo of the affair into Yuri’s clothes in front of Go-eun, ominously warning, “Be careful, Su-hyun’s mother. There’s no cure for the foot cut by the axe you trust.” She then took an envelope of money from Seon-yul, the mastermind behind the catastrophe, and left.
Seon-yul continued his vengeful rampage, sending a photo of Su-hyun and Yuri together to Su-ho. Confronted by Yuri, Su-hyun firmly told her, “I can’t forgive you. How can you look at me and smile, hug your mother, and act as if nothing’s wrong? Don’t casually say you made a mistake. Wait until I’ve sorted things out.”
Returning to her car, Su-hyun clutched her heart and wept bitterly, revealing the devastating pain of losing the 2 people she loved at once. Seon-yul coldly observed Su-hyun’s suffering, taking pleasure in having brought her from her happiest moment to rock bottom, celebrating with friends over drinks. Yet, he also showed a bittersweet expression, lost in thought.
Su-ho, devastated by the fact that Su-hyun knew everything about his affair with Yuri, pleaded with her, “I couldn’t bring myself to tell you when you were trying to start over.” Su-hyun responded, “Do you know what I find hardest to endure? Not your affair. No matter how unjust or angry I am, it’s not worse than losing my child. What I really can’t bear is that I tried to live because of you two, not knowing what you were like. You’re no longer my man,” she said, breaking down in tears.
Meanwhile, Su-hyun confronted Yuri’s biological mother, demanding to know how she found out where Yuri worked. The mother mockingly mentioned receiving an amusing photo. Unfazed, Su-hyun retorted, “You think you can blackmail me with that photo? People like you who sell their children for money won’t get to me.”
Realizing that Seon-yul was behind involving Yuri’s mother, Su-hyun headed to the lakeside as he had instructed. Seon-yul provocatively grabbed Su-hyun’s arm, saying, “I once wanted to die here too. But as it’s written in that book, if we have one conviction to protect in our hearts, we must live on. My conviction is this: to answer death with a greater death. Are you scared?”
Su-hyun shook off his arm, declaring, “Dying is easy. It’s living on that’s hard. As Gun-woo’s mother, I have no regrets or shame. You can kill me, but you can’t kill this heart,” and turned away resolutely. Seon-yul watched her leave, grinding his teeth, his unquenchable thirst for revenge palpable.
Su-ho sought out Seon-yul, who had intentionally approached Su-hyun and led them to disaster. Su-ho angrily asked, “Did Kim Jun order this? What do you hope to achieve with this old photo? Is this your idea of revenge?”
To which Seon-yul replied, “It wouldn’t be revenge. She killed my father,” heightening the tension with his calm and cold demeanor. Su-ho grabbed Seon-yul by the collar, saying, “You’re just the son of the man who killed my son, and if my wife hadn’t done it, I would have that day. Understand?”
Seon-yul retorted, “That’s why I’m doing it. What your wife did,” revealing his claws and raising questions and tension about whether his revenge plan would end with Su-hyun’s life.
Meanwhile, Su-ho, Han-sang (played by Sung Ji-ru), and Hye-geum (played by Cha Su-yeon) plotted to bring down Kim Jun on a news talk show. At the same time, Seon-yul handed Kim Jun an envelope with a mysterious photo, causing Kim Jun to erupt in anger at his secretary. Seon-yul left with a faint smile, his mysterious actions raising curiosity.
On the other hand, Su-hyun coldly told Yuri, “I won’t abandon you. Not because I adore you, but for my mother, who cared for you as much as her own daughter. I will protect my mother. So, you better come to your senses,” making a strong and firm decision to protect her precious family, her mother Go-eun (played by Won Mi-kyung).
Contrary to Seon-yul’s expectations, Su-hyun endured the pain of seeing the photo of Su-ho and Yuri’s affair. He went to Go-eun’s restaurant to push her to the brink. There, Su-hyun found the restaurant empty and in disarray. Worried, she contacted her mom, and to her surprise, Seon-yul answered, “Your mother is with me,” causing Su-hyun to rush to the emergency room.
There, she tenderly looked at her mother lying in the ER. Believing Seon-yul had harmed her, Su-hyun went to his house to find him. At the same time, Seon-yul, driving home, came face to face with Su-hyun standing in the headlights.
In that moment, Seon-yul moved his foot from the brake to the accelerator, charging towards Su-hyun just as she had killed his father, Ji-woong (played by Oh Man-seok), on that fateful day. The episode ended with the intense cross-cutting of Su-hyun’s unflinching gaze and Seon-yul’s frenzied expression, leaving us on edge. The question remains: will Seon-yul, consumed by revenge, take Su-hyun’s life?
