How to Take Care of Skin in Air Conditioner: My Top 5 Tips (& Best Budget Choices)

Edit Posted by with No comments
Here are my top 5 beauty tips that would help your skincare in the AC room. Choosing the right beauty products is important though, you should know how to use them properly for the best results.

The air conditioner has become part of our lives in summer. While it does have some benefits, its negative impacts on our skin are undeniable.

Health benefits of air conditioning

Living in AC can:
  • Protect the skin from sweat and dirt, thereby making it more healthy.
  • Reduce sweating due to heat, thus minimizing the risk of your body's water loss and dehydration.
  • Reduce the temperature of the air, so the body doesn't have to regulate the hot temperature and avoids heat strokes.
  • Reduce asthma and allergies due to environmental allergens, bacteria, and dust.
  • Enhance comfort levels at work and at leisure.
  • Help make your skin fairer? Indeed, the cold temperatures will not make your skin brighter. Skin color is dependent on numerous factors, one of which is the exposure to the sun. Staying in air conditioner (or cold temperature) and getting less direct sun would make your skin tone lighter. Also, AC makes your skin dry, which results in your temporarily fairer skin appearance.
Disadvantages of air conditioner on health

While AC keeps you cool, staying put in the AC rooms can:
  • Make your skin lose its moisture, drying out your skin and mucous membranes. It also reduces your skin's elasticity. The continuous loss and inefficient replacement of water for your skin fibers would lead to dry, chapped, disordered, and aging skin.
  • Affect your respiratory system in case of sudden changes in temperature and humidity.
  • Worsen eye conditions such as blepharitis and conjunctivitis. It also causes problems for contact lens wearers.
I myself used to suffer from the bad effects of the air conditioner. It not just dehydrated my skin, making it more oily, but dried out my hair. Still, things get better after I have improved my skincare routine.

My top tips on how to take care of skin in the air conditioner

1. Ensure your skin well-hydrated inside and outside

This is considered the most important thing to do if you want healthy skin in any circumstances. As AC makes your skin drier and less elastic over time, it is necessary to make up for the water lost not only from the outside but also inside. I also recommend the best beauty products I have used and enjoyed great results from. (Note: My skin type is sensitive, combination)

Skincare tips with cosmetics:

  • Regularly use moisturizers on the face, eyes, lips, and body, especially on the skin surface of exposed areas. Make sure you always apply moisturizer after a shower or bath because using soaps alone would dry out your skin.
My favorite and recommended products:
TONYMOLY The Chok Chok Green Tea Watery Cream
Vaseline Lip Therapy
DHC Medicated Lip Cream
[SecretKey] Starting Treatment Skin Care

  • Use a water spray to hydrate and dampen your skin immediately. Please bear in mind to leave it for about 30 seconds and PAT IT DRY. Otherwise, water will evaporate, making your skin drier.
My favorite and recommended product:
Eau Thermale Avène Thermal Spring Water

  • Use face mask about twice a week. Most of the mask types should be used no more than 3 times a week. For the lotion mask, you can use it daily without wash-off.
My favorite and recommended products:
SABORINO Morning Face Mask 32 Sheets (I don't wash my face with strong cleansers in the morning which may strip the sebum off my skin, resulting in skin dehydration. To ensure the face is clean and moisturized enough, I use this type of mask daily in the morning after washing the face briefly with water. Let the mask stay on the face in just 60 seconds, and then wash the face again with water. This is followed by a light-weight moisturizer and sunscreen)
Thayers Alcohol-Free Witch Hazel with Organic Aloe Vera Formula Toner, Lavender (one of the best toners for lotion mask)
Hatomugi Skin Conditioner (one of the best toners for lotion mask)

Health and beauty tips with supplements and natural resources:

  • Using just cosmetics is not enough to maintain my healthy skin. A good diet with enough high-quality protein, lots of vegetables and fruits, supplements taken, and a reduced amount of coffee, alcohol, and processed sugar consumed are also important. I find a visible improvement in my skin by doing so. Also, drinking enough water daily keeps my skin hydrated from the inside (don't forget to sit down and have it SLOWLY. Drinking too fast will not be of any help to you).
My favorite and recommended supplements (they help improve my skin's hydration and elasticity. I do look a bit younger by using them regularly <3). For the best results, I take collagen and hyaluronic acid (HA) together. Collagen increases skin hydration that would be maintained by using HA):
NeoCell Super Collagen + C Type 1&3
NeoCell - Hyaluronic Acid

2. Use a humidifier

A humidifier works to reduce dryness resulted from using AC. Either get a cool-mist humidifier or find DIY ways to boost the moisture in the air. For example, put bowl(s) of water in the room next to a source of heat; use a water spray bottle to spray around the room; get a few houseplants.

3. Take breaks from the AC

Don't remain in the AC room hour by hour. Let your skin bathe humidity by moving outside the office every 45 minutes or so. This not only helps refresh your skin but also increases your mood.

4. Avoid further skin irritation

If the air conditioning dries out your skin, don't make it worse by using too much perfume, harsh soaps, or heavily fragranced detergents.

5. Wear your sunscreen

Sunscreen is a must whether you are outside the room or not. Other than sun protection benefits, it helps lock in the moisture beneath the surface and maintains a healthy complexion. Again, NEVER forget to apply your sunscreen.

My favorite and recommended product:
the SAEM Sunscreen SPF50+ PA++++ (It may not be one of the best-quality sunscreens in the market these days, but it should be safe to say that the product is packed with less-irritating ingredients and does its job of protecting my skin under the sun well. The budget-friendly price is a bonus.)
