"Pyramid Game" is a tough but fascinating show to watch. At Baekyeon Girls’ High School in Seoul, South Korea, there’s a mean game that decides who is popular and who isn’t. Every month, students vote for who they like most, and this vote creates a list that shows who’s in charge and who gets picked on.
What is "Pyramid Game" about?
Sung Su-ji, the new girl played by WJSN’s Bona, doesn’t know about this mean game and is likely to be chosen as the next victim. She becomes an easy target for bullying.
At the top of this game is Baek Ha-rin, played by Jang Dang-ah, who is very tough and controls the game strictly. "Pyramid Game" becomes a tense battle of wills between Su-ji, who wants to end the game, and Ha-rin, who will do anything to keep it going.
Generally, "Pyramid Game" is an exciting drama that keeps you watching. It’s easy to care about the characters, and the show makes you think about the bad effects of violence in schools and how important it is to stop it. The gradually growing friendship between Su-ji and some other girls is a chef's kiss.
Review
The acting is one of the drama's highlights, with many outstanding portrayals. Bona plays Su-ji as a strong and good-hearted hero. She shows how the game hurts people and makes the school a bad place for students when they need to feel safe for their mental health.
Jang Da-ah, in her first acting role, plays Ha-rin. She makes us curious about her character’s secrets, and it’s shocking to see her character hurt others. Her acting makes Ha-rin seem real and cold-hearted.
Also, Myung Ja eun (Ryu Da-in) is an incredibly adorable, pure-hearted, and gentle character. I really enjoyed it.~
After the first episode, it might seem confusing. The main character continues to participate in the game without questioning the teachers. You might wonder, “Why doesn’t she ask about the odd and cruel game her classmates are playing?” Yet, as you continue to watch, the reasons become clear, and whether the main character participates becomes less important. The story conveys a profound message.~
Indeed, "Pyramid Game" stands out because it’s not just a simple story about bullying. The characters are complex, not just good or bad. Even with bullying happening, the girls form strong friendships and play clever games with each other. It’s not only about who betrays whom but also about unexpected twists and tests of loyalty.
I really like the girls, their flaws and strengths, and I especially enjoy seeing the less popular ones change the game. The show mixes drama, everyday life, and friendship perfectly. The dodgeball and paintball games were meant to be tough, but the girls turned them into the most touching moments.
